AI Agents for Dental Practices

AI Agents for Dental Practices

01/31/2025

AI is all the rage–as a business tool, for web searches, and for personal creativity, the use of AI is growing daily. Like all industries, Dentistry needs to evaluate the pros and cons of AI and in particular the use of AI agents to streamline the workflow within dental practices. As with all tools, AI agents have pros and cons and those must be evaluated with a trained professional eye. Let’s take a closer look at what AI agents are, how they work, and the pros and cons of employing an AI agent in your practice.

What are AI Agents?

Per Amazon, a leading provider of AI business services, an AI agent is a piece of software that can “interact with its environment, collect data, and use the data to perform self-determined tasks to meet predetermined goals.” This is a rather loose definition, but AI agents are a loose category. You’ll see the phrase used to describe any automated, algorithm-based software that interacts with its environment, customers clients, or data seemingly autonomously. While they can act alone, AI agents respond to human direction and follow the commands and tasks given to them by human employees.

What are the Pros and Cons of AI Agents for Dental Practices?

AI agents are growing in popularity; for example, you may have already interacted with one when using an automated sales agent or customer service agent on a website. They also work behind the scenes, gathering and collating data, handling schedules, and the like. This sounds useful–and it very much can be–but as with all things, there are pros and cons to utilizing an AI Agent at your dental practice. Your needs will be unique, but here are some basic considerations as to the strengths and weaknesses of AI agents in a dental context:

The pros of AI Agents in dentistry:

  • AI agents provide around-the-clock service at whatever task they’re set to. As a piece of software running on a computer or server, the AI agent can work 24 hours a day handling the jobs assigned to it. The advantages for record-keeping, coding, billing, and similar dental office work are obvious, as is the potential increase in office efficiency.
  • AI agents provide quick access to specialized skills, which can be especially useful for smaller offices in need of short-term help with something specific like coding, training, or adapting to a new software system or insurance provider.
  • Customer service may benefit greatly from AI agents, as the AI service provider can be available around the clock and can answer basic questions or provide core information quickly and easily. This frees up employees to deal with more complex tasks and allows patients to get the information and services they need quickly and easily at the time most convenient for them.
  • AI agents can save both time and money, offering a real boon to smaller practices, expanding practices, and startups. Using an AI agent is a fast way to get a new practice up and running, jumpstart a new location, or streamline a smaller practice. As a force multiplier and time/money saver, AI agents may be the right solution for practices at many stages of their development cycle.

There are drawbacks and challenges to all things, including AI agents. Here are some of the common concerns about the use of AI agents in dental practices:

  • Many questions are remaining about the legal and ethical implications of employing AI agents, particularly when dealing with individual patient data or other medical information. We’re learning more about this evolving field every day, but many dental practices may want to consider these questions when weighing the pros and cons of an AI agent.
  • Cybersecurity and data security likewise require additional attention and consideration when AI agents are in use. Introducing a powerful digital tool has many benefits, but like all digital tools AI agents do bring some additional security concerns that must be addressed and monitored in the light of cutting-edge developments in the field.
  • AI agents require human oversight, both to provide the best possible services and to ensure that proper transparency and oversight practices are being followed. AI makes things faster and more efficient but it does not fully replace human beings.
  • Customer relations can benefit from AI agents–if the agents are deployed properly. If a practice over-relies on AI agents, patients may become frustrated with the lack of human touch and miss the ability of a human employee to answer questions and respond to their concerns.

AI Agents and Your Dental Practice

None of this is meant as either an endorsement or a condemnation of AI agents in a dental context, but rather to illustrate the various considerations that come with the adoption of these tools. Are AI agents right for your practice? That depends on a great many things and a thorough, professional-quality assessment of your practice’s marketing, media, and overall digital presence.
